Mayor's Corner
1st Quarter 2009

Well Folks,

It's a wrap on another exciting quarter of a year in good ole' Plain City.

It is always amazing to realize how much revolves around building in our City. With the drastic slowdown we are experiencing in our building, we are actually getting back ahead of the game. Our employees have been very busy in the winter time just passed. We had a lot of snow and that means a lot of hours clocked behind the wheel of our plows. We can't say enough about the job done in staying ahead of these storms. We are appreciative of Mitch Willson, Dusty Palmer and Courtney Smith for the hours spent, sometime in the wee hours of the morning, and the job they did in our plows.

On the City Council agendas this quarter were several items that will mean changes. We had our professional staff review our impact fees and prepare a study of what they are currently and what the feeling was for the correct amounts that might and should be charged. The City Council decided to up the fees after the review came in and we held a public hearing to gather public input. We ended up moving our fees to the top of the schedule of allowable fees for all new buildings in Plain City. These fees will give additional revenues to areas such as Fire safety, Roads, Parks, Recreation and a Trail system. These are the areas that new people place the most burdens on our current infrastructure.

We enjoyed a great Homecoming Celebration. March 17 th is our Founders Day and we again used the High School to house the festivities. We had a broad participation this year that allowed many people to bring items for display. We are very happy to have so many talented people in town.

Our work on the North Legacy Highway project continues and we have meeting after meeting discussing the benefits of each minute item that comes up. It is really getting to be a cumbersome project. We are happy that the latest alignments are to the west of Plain City and not dissecting our town. We are not out of the woods yet as Rep. Kerry Gibson continues to try to influence anyone who will listen to him to have it go through the middle of our town. Luckily, at this point, not many listen to him, keep your fingers crossed. Anyone who has any influence with him is asked to please call him and ask him to end his vendetta against us here in Plain City. We represent half of his Legislative District and he should listen to us more than telling us what is good for us.

We continue to push the School District to work with us on the Old Elementary. They are still trying to sell it to anyone who will pay their price. We had a group come in asking if we would let them put in a drug treatment center. You can imagine the furor that stirred up. We are fighting as hard as we can to block these types but it is hard to keep holding them off when all the district cares about is the money and not our community.

More good news is coming out of our sewer treatment facility. With the first full month of testing, after bringing our new Chlorine Detention Basin on line, the results are in and we are extremely pleased. We are running at numbers that are 1/10 th of allowable maximums. That allows us to use less Chlorine and as of right now, we are using about $10 a day less than we have been in the past. That is a lot of money back in savings.

All in all a very good quarter. I will keep you posted on all the happenings in the city and next quarter I will bring you up to speed on the Fire Dept. and the growth of the crew and also the jump in the number of calls run.

Thanks,

Mayor Jay Jenkins
